This attractive, very long-lived conifer (over 1000 years) is native to the subalpine and alpine habitats of Tasmania, where it grows at elevations between 700 and 1500 m. The pencil pine reaches up to 20 m in height and presents ascending branches, dark-green, scale-like leaves arranged in spirals and male and female cones on the same tree. Athrotaxis cupressoides is cultivated for its soft, reddish wood, which is often used in construction, and also makes a beautiful ornamental for temperate climates in USDA Zones 8 and 9.
