This monoecious Australian conifer grows in western and central Tasmania in temperate rainforests at altitudes between 900 and 1200 m. It produces a trunk covered by brownish-orange bark, a sparsely branched crown, small, scale-like leaves and orange cones. The soft, pale red wood is rather rare. Athrotaxis laxifolia will grow well in temperate climates with cool, humid summers and is hardy to USDA Zone 8. It is perhaps a natural hybrid between Athrotaxis cupressoides and A. selaginoides.
