A medium-sized conifer native to tropical forests to 1000 m in southeastern China, Vietnam, Japan on the Island of Kyushu and to Taiwan, where it may be introduced. It grows a straight trunk with flaky bark and a spreading, somewhat uneven crown. The leaves are very thick, leathery and quite broad and a rich, glossy green. The yellowish wood is used in construction, for carving and other purposes. The round seeds are about 1 cm across and rich in oil. Nageia nagi makes a beautiful and robust ornamental and is famed for its exceptional wind resistance.
