Cupressus forbesii TECATE CYPRESS (referred to as ARIZONA CYPRESS in 1964 and 1969)
Located on the peninsular ranges of Southern California and Baja California, the Cupressus forbesii grow at altitudes of 1500-5000 feet and up to heights of 30 feet. The Cupressus forbesii is fire dependent, in that normally the cones will not open and drop seeds unless prompted to do so by the heat of a fire. The Tecate cypress is the only plant on which the rare Thorne's hairstreak butterfly lays its eggs. According to the CNPS inventory of Rare and Endangered plants C. forbesii has been given a designation of 1B.1 - rare, threatened or endangered in California and elsewhere. |
