The former Fiorentina and Roma striker was Argentina's record scorer with 56 goals from 78 games, until Lionel Messi went past his international tally last year.

Argentina are struggling to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, with Messi banned for three of their remaining four games after a four-letter rant at officials following a 1-0 win over Chile.

But Batistuta this week backed his country to make Russia - and for Atletico boss Diego Simeone to take over at some point in the future.

He said: "Argentina will go to the World Cup but I am not at ease.

"I know that Argentine football has to change and do things right, but I do not want Argentina to be out of the World Cup.

"Simeone will be the coach of the national team. I think he's just waiting for things to settle."
