Matters of the Heart: Haydée Santamaria and Buffy Sainte-Marie

​What is it like to be a female activist? Do women do politics differently? In this talk, hear from Augustana professor Janet Wesselius to learn about two revolutionary women who both thought art and culture were significant political activities. Haydée Santamaria (1923-1980) was a Cuban guerilla leader and founder of the cultural institution Casa de las Américas.​ ​Buffy Sainte-Marie (born 1941) is a Canadian musician, artist and social activist. Santamaria saw art and culture as a tool for profound social change and Sainte-Marie entwined art with her political activities. Their politics, activism and art are all rooted in their deepest emotional commitments: in other words, it’s a matter of the heart.

This Lunch and Learn will look at the similarities between Santamaria and Sainte-Marie and see how culture and art make profound social change.
