Broad, pyramidal tree with dense, regular and more or less horizontal branching. The tree can grow to approx. 10 - 15 m in height and 5 m in width. The trunk is greyish brown, turning greyish black later, deeply scaled: the bare twigs are orange-brown. The intensely silvery blue colour of the stiff, very pointy, closely grouped needles is striking. Its long, cylindrical cones are green at first and turn yellowish brown as they ripen. This Picea makes little demands when it comes to soil type but does require a sunny site. It tolerates dryness better than other spruces and is resistant to urban climates and air pollution. 'Hoopsii' is one of the best blue spruces.
