Small tree with a very slender crown, 3 to 4 m. The crown stays columnar for a long time, eventually narrow ovoid. This American cultivar has very dense and regular branching. The lateral branches and twigs grow almost vertically upwards. Young twigs are light brown. The needles are blue-grey, stiff and spiky, 2 to 3 cm long. The long, cylindrical cones are scarcely produced. Has few demands as to soil, provided it is adequately nutritious and moist, and requires a sunny position. Requires slightly drier conditions than other Picea species, is resistant to urban climate and air pollution.
