Cryptomeria japonica 'Araucarioides' Cryptomeria japonica 'Araucarioides'

Cupressaceae

Cryptomeria japonica 'Araucarioides' Cryptomeria japonica 'Araucarioides'

Broad pyramidal, usually branched from ground level, very large shrub to small tree. Eventually grows to a multi-stemmed plant, 5 to 6 m tall and almost as wide. The bark is reddish brown and peels in long strips. The needles are somewhat shorter, more curved and a bit farther apart than the species. The branches are often straight along their whole length with vigorously produced branchlets at their tips creating a loose tree with clusters of twigs at the end of each branch. This unusual appearance is a typical feature of ‘Araucarioides’ and the similar-looking ‘Dacrydioides’, which grows significantly lower and wider. Young plants may suffer from frost in harsh winters and heavy snowfall can cause branches to break. It cannot tolerate sharp, dry wind and the tree prefers to grow in well-drained, somewhat moist and acidic soil.
