Seed cones & needlelike leaves of Western larch (Larix occidentails).

Larch needles are produced in dense clusters on short, lateral branches called spur shoots (red arrow). Unlike most other genera on the pine family (Pinaceae), the genus Larix includes deciduous conifers that drop their golden needles in the fall. The genus Cedrus also produces needle clusters on spur shoots, but it contains evergreen species with erect seed cones resembling those of a fir (Abies).
