1970 Plymouth Superbird

This 1970 Plymouth Superbird is one of approximately 2,000 examples produced for a single model year between October and December 1969. It was completed on November 30, 1969, and spent time in Tennessee before it was purchased by John Vaughn, a Chrysler Corporation Space Division engineer assigned to conduct wind-tunnel testing during the development of the Dodge Charger Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird. The car underwent a refurbishment that was completed in 2005 before it was purchased by the seller in 2010. Finished in blue over white vinyl upholstery, the car is powered by a 440ci V8 paired with a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic transmission and an 8.75″ Sure Grip rear end with a 3.55:1 final drive. Features include a nose cone, a rear wing, a black vinyl roof, power-assisted steering, front disc brakes, Rallye 15″ wheels, and a push-button AM radio. Modifications consist of an aluminum radiator, a 16″ cooling fan, a coolant-overflow tank, and a PerTronix electronic ignition system. Service performed in 2023 involved replacement of the voltage regulator, the reverse-light switch, and the headlights. This Superbird is now offered with a collection of photos taken during development of the Daytona and the Superbird, a signed article written by John Vaughn, a reproduction window sticker, documentation from Galen Govier, manufacturer’s literature, removed parts, refurbishment photos, service records, and a clean Louisiana title in the seller’s name.

1970 Plymouth Superbird

Based on Plymouth’s mid-size Road Runner model, the 1970-only Superbird was redesigned for NASCAR competition, which required Chrysler to produce approximately 2,000 examples for homologation. This example was finished from the factory in Blue Fire Metallic (EB5) and was repainted during the 2000s refurbishment. Features include an aerodynamic nose cone with satin-black graphics, flip-up headlamps, fender vents, hood pins, a black vinyl roof, a tall rear wing, white Plymouth quarter-panel script, and dual exhaust outlets that exit below the rear bumper. Replacement headlights were installed in March 2023. Imperfections in the left quarter panel paint are noted by the seller.

Rallye 15″ wheels wear chrome beauty rings and are mounted with 255/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires that were installed in October 2022. A spare tire is stowed in the trunk. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums. The brake booster was rebuilt in 2010.

The cabin features high-back bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in white vinyl along with color-coordinated door panels. A black dashboard, headliner, and carpets are fitted, and additional equipment includes a heater and defroster and Road Runner–themed rubber floor mats. A replacement reverse-light switch was installed in September 2023. A Richard Petty signature is present on the glovebox door. Reception from the push-button AM radio is described by the seller as staticky.

A three-spoke steering wheel with a chrome horn ring and a Road Runner “Beep! Beep!” center cap frames a tachometer with an inset clock, a 150-mph speedometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 91k miles, approximately 2,300 of which were added under current ownership.

The 440ci Super Commando V8 features a four-barrel carburetor, a dual-snorkel air-cleaner assembly, and an orange engine block, intake manifold, and valve covers. Output was factory rated at 375 horsepower. A PerTronix electronic ignition was installed under the seller’s ownership along with a Griffin heavy-duty aluminum radiator, a Derale Performance 16″ cooling fan, and a Dorman coolant-overflow tank. Gaskets for the valve cover and the valley pan were replaced in September 2022 along with the battery and the spark plugs, and the carburetor and the alternator were rebuilt earlier that year. The voltage regulator was replaced in December 2023.
