Super Mario Bros 3: Mario Forever – More Than Just a Game, It’s a Crypto-Mining Trap
Super Mario Bros 3: Mario Forever has a nasty surprise for its fans. This PC fan game is more than just a fun pastime. Some versions now host harmful malware that can seriously damage your computer, according to mobilesyrup.
Cyble researchers exposed the threat. According to BleepingComputer, these experts discovered that ill-intentioned actors have trojanized the game. This manipulated version contains hidden malware consisting of a crypto-miner and a data-stealer.
The trouble starts when you download the game. The trojanized game secretly downloads a crypto-miner that mines Monero (XMR). This process uses your computer’s resources, slowing it down significantly and increasing your power bills.
Moreover, the malware installs a data-stealing program. It extracts sensitive browser information. This includes passwords, cookies, and various online service credentials. Services at risk include Discord, Minecraft, Roblox, and Telegram. It can even record screenshots and media from your desktop, webcams, and mics.
The source of the infection is a modified game installer. It operates covertly while the game installs. Researchers believe the infected game versions circulate on gaming forums and social media groups. Even innocent Reddit users may unknowingly share the link.
