Giving a great deal of credence to the term “time flies,” today marks the 20th anniversary of the ‘90s sitcom Kenan & Kel. The sitcom saw two of its stars, SNL’s Kenan Thompson and Game Changers’ Kel Mitchell, jumping ship from their TV show roots. Set in Chicago, Illinois, the show followed the comedic adventures of Kenan Rockmore and Kel Kimble, two inner-city teenagers who engaged in a litany of mischievous adventures. While Kenan was characterized as more of a level-headed schemer, Kel was notable for his dimwittedness and his love for orange soda.
When the Nickelodeon show premiered on August 17, 1996, it was among many that catered to the young adult market during the ‘90s: Sister, Sister, Felicity, Boy Meets World, Teen Summit, Family Matters, Nick News and Roundhouse. While many television programs that were geared towards younger viewers during the 1990s imbued their respective episodes with social issues pertinent to adolescence and young adulthood, Kenan & Kel set itself apart from its counterparts by offering simple, lighthearted humor.
Stylistically, the sitcom combined Thompson’s dry wit and sarcasm with Mitchell’s brand of slapstick humor and physical comedy. Die-hard fans of the show will surely remember the episode in “The April Fools”, which Kenan pranked the majority of his friends and family, and Kel inadvertently ripped of a mailman’s mustache.
With its theme song performed by rap icon Coolio, the sitcom continues to be a must-watch for fans of the comedic duo. In honor of its 20th anniversary, we’re counting down the dynamic duo’s 10 most memorable moments.
